A roof replacement is a short project with a lot riding on it. For the day your roof is off, your house is open - so the thing that matters most is that the work is planned, staffed, and finished without a gap. We manage roof replacements the same way we manage a renovation: one point of contact, a crew that shows up when we said, and a job that closes out the day it starts.

We tear off rather than shingle over. Going over an old roof hides whatever is under it, adds weight, and shortens the life of the new shingles. Stripping to the deck costs a little more in labor and it's worth it every time - it's the only way to see the sheathing, find soft or rotted spots, and fix them before they're sealed under a new roof. If we find deck damage, you hear about it while the roof is open, with a number attached, not after the fact.

From there it's the details that decide how long a roof lasts. Architectural asphalt shingles, drip edge at the eaves and rakes, and flashing worked properly around chimneys, valleys, and wall lines. Water finds the weak point in a roof the way it finds the weak point in anything else, and almost every roof that leaks early leaks at a transition - not in the middle of a field of shingles.

We plan most roofs as a single day. On a recent Kingston project, an aging asphalt roof on a colonial came off and roughly 18 squares of IKO Cambridge shingles in Dual Black went back on - main roof, front wing, and rear ell - between morning and evening. Dumpsters were on site, the tear-off debris left with the crew, and the homeowner never had a night with the house open. That's the standard we scope to, and when a roof is big or cut up enough that one day isn't realistic, we tell you that up front instead of discovering it at four in the afternoon.

Roofing is also the messiest work we do, and we treat that as part of the job. The dumpster goes where it won't tear up the driveway, the grounds get cleaned before the crew leaves, and your landscaping and siding are protected while the old roof is coming down. A finished roof and a wrecked yard is only half a job.
